Host – Parasite Genetics

چکیده
Host-parasite interactions often have complex dynamics. At the level of individual allele frequencies, the dynamics are difficult to predict and difficult to measure. However, aggregate properties of polymorphism, such as allelic diversity or the frequency of resistance, may be relatively easy to work with. I study this problem with computer simulations of a host-parasite model. In one example, the simulations show that the allelic diversity at a locus is similar in a host-parasite model and a neutral model in which drift is the only evolutionary process. Allelic diversity is similar in the two models, even though the temporal dynamics of individual allele frequencies are very different. In a second example, the genetic system that would be inferred from analyzing samples of hosts and parasites is quite different from the actual specificity that determines the dynamics of the system. Thus, general conclusions about the specificity of host-parasite genetics must be analyzed in the context of the expected statistical distributions of polymorphism. The final example shows that the frequency of resistance provides an interesting aggregate measure of host-parasite polymorphism. If the ratio of parasite generation time to the time between the reproductive seasons of the hosts is small, then no regular periodicity in the frequency of resistance occurs. However, if parasites have many generations per reproductive season of the host, then resistance fluctuates with a period equal to the seasonality of the host. The important role of seasonality shown here differs from the emphasis in previous theories on the relative generation times of host and parasite.

Mapping interspecific genetic architecture in a host-parasite interaction system.
Under a hypothesis that the host-parasite interaction system is governed by genome-for-genome interaction, we propose a genetic model that integrates genetic information from both the host and parasite genomes. The model can be used for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) conferring the interaction between host and parasite and detecting interactions among these QTL. A one-dimensional genome-...

Understanding parasite strategies for evasion, manipulation or exploitation of hosts is crucial for many fields, from ecology to medical sciences. Generally, research has focused on either the host response to parasitic infection, or the parasite virulence mechanisms. More recently, integrated studies of host-parasite interactions have allowed significant advances in theoretical and applied bio...
متن کاملA virulent parasite can provide protection against a lethal parasitoid.
Hosts often become infected with multiple parasite strains or species. Previous work has shown that the outcome of infections with multiple parasite strains or species often differs significantly from that of single infections, making them a potentially important factor in determining the prevalence and spread of disease. Here we show that infection with a virulent parasite increases host survi...

In this study, we analyze the degree of susceptibility/un-susceptibility of five strains of Biomphalaria glabrata from different geographical origins successively challenged with a panel of 4 Schistosoma mansoni strains. A total of 20 homopatric and heteropatric host-parasite combinations were tested with exposure doses of 1, 10, 20, 30 and 50 miracidia per individual host. By doing this, we ch...

Numerous loci in host organisms are involved in parasite recognition, such as major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes in vertebrates or genes involved in gene-for-gene (GFG) relationships in plants. Diversity is commonly observed at such loci and at corresponding loci encoding antigenic molecules in parasites. Multilocus theoretical models of host-parasite coevolution predict that polymorp...
